My search for Self as Subject in struggle, my struggle and quest for a liberating community which holds the promise of life in its fullness and abundance for all, always together with and in relation to other women and men, over many years and through various platforms has finally led me to Critical Feminist Biblical Interpretation (CFBI) and the Dance of Liberation and Transformation as an effective and holistic working hermeneutical tool kit for socio personal liberation and structural transformation.
Chapter one is an account of my personalised women’s experience of socialised captivity within the wider web of the socially constructed oppression of women. The role and function of culture and religion show the way the bible and religion have been used to abet and reinforce this Kyriarchal/patriarchal captivity although it also offered visions of freedom and dignity. It is also an account with my own socio-personal experience of struggle for liberation and justice and my faith journey to reclaim Self as a subject.
Chapter two focuses on the bible/Scriptures and a variety of ochfeministoch methods of interpretation that were ochprogressiveoch/remedial but ultimately kyriocentric and a re-inscription of Kyriarchy. A critical survey of the existing feminist paradigms of biblical interpretation shows their short falls. In the final analysis, a new paradigm, the Critical Feminist Biblical Interpretation/Dance of Liberation and Transformation as an apt hermeneutical tool kit is proposed.
Chapter three is an exposition and elaboration of the ochCritical Feminist Hermeneutics of Liberationoch expressed in terms of the ochDance of Liberation and Social Transformationoch. It is the writer’s belief that it is thus far the most radical, comprehensive and relevant socio personal and socio-systemic analytical tool for understanding women’s experience of subordination. Beyond mere critical understanding it also shows the way for social personal liberation and structural transformation worked out within the ekklesia of women towards liberation for all.
Chapter four is an attempt to demonstrate how the dance working methodology/ hermeneutical tool kit can be applied in interpreting selected biblical texts: Mark 5: 21 – 43 and 1 Tim 2: 1-15.
The concluding pages ochThe Journey is Home: Towards a Praxis for Liberation and Transformationoch is a challenge to Asian Women's Resource Centre for Culture & Theology (AWRC) to adopt CFBI as the way to promote socio-personal liberation and structural transformation for wo/men in general and her own members in particular. Critical Feminist Biblical Interpretation is a process of conscientization for the liberation of wo/men and the transformation of structures of captivity into structures that nourish and sustain life in its abundance for all. |
